New Faces Shake Up the CFP Semifinals

College Football Playoffs

For the first time since 2014, the College Football Playoffs will not have their usual faces in it. Ohio State, the University of Alabama, the University of Georgia, and Clemson had a streak of 9 years of one or more of the teams being in the semifinals and the finals. This year, the University of Oregon, Indiana University, Ole Miss, and the University of Miami will be representing the playoffs.

But why do new faces change the price tags for tickets? Since the winnings of quarterfinals, the teams that are in the Semifinals have rapidly changed the pricing of all tickets and have been declining since Jan. 2nd.

The Fiesta Bowl, a match-up between Ole Miss Vs. Miami on Thursday Night has seen prices slide from $799 on Dec. 31st to $642 by Jan. 2nd. While The Peach Bowl, a match-up between Indiana Vs. Oregon on Friday Night has seen prices slide from $742 on Dec. 31st to $648 by Jan. 2nd. Both games look like they will keep sliding until the day of the games.

Without the familiar faces reaching the top, the large fan bases and supporters have shifted the market. The CFP National Championship market has been more stable than the semifinals. Average asking prices hovered just above $5,500 in early January, still a large price tag, but could switch if unlikely match-ups make it to the big stage.

When powerhouse programs are out, demand can soften quickly, translating into more affordable access for those eager to catch the action in person.
